Pierre-Henri Wicomb’s spine-tingling score underpins Jorrie van der Walt’s magnificent cinematography in the chilling ecological horror that is Gaia. From the seemingly innocuous opening sequences to the twist-in-the-tail ending, Gaia will have you on the edge of your seat and loving the ride. And, despite sometimes being awestruck by what you see on screen, as in all good horror, you won’t want to look away. Actors Monique Rockman, Anthony Oseyemi, Carel Nel and Alex van Dyk put in solid performances as the doomed forest rangers and menacing survivalists, but the true star of this film is South Africa’s glorious, voluptuous, Tsitsikamma Forest. Mother Earth is coming for us, and Gaia is her portent!
