You’re My Favourite Place

You’re My Favourite Place is a coming-of-age film by the award-winning filmmaker Jahmil X.T Qubeka follows four troubled township teenagers, who set off in a stolen taxi to Hole in the Wall, on South Africa’s Wild Coast, where Nelisa Vena hopes to commune with the spirit of her dead sister. En route they pick up a smooth talking desperado, who is being sought by the police, and an ancient crone, who coaxes them to try a hallucinatory drug. The characters, including the flamboyant, cross-dressing Zongi, come from rough backgrounds and on their journey descend into horror experiences. Accompanied by the menacing black guard dog Verwoerd, the teenagers reveal a more tender side, as they help each other deal with problems of gender identity, sexual abuse and the consequences of unprotected sex.
